Next Generation Traffic Operations Data Service
Project Description: The Next Generation Traffic Operations Data Service (NextGen) focuses on deploying advanced, lane–level traffic intelligence, particularly along the I–95 corridor in the Richmond region. The service will deploy Smart Road Platform to enhance safety, reduce congestion, and prepare for connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs). The initial project covers an 8–mile segment of I–95 from Arthur Ashe Boulevard to Sliding Hill Road (Exit 86). The project features a dense network of sensors and cameras to provide continuous, lane–level tracking and real–time traffic intelligence. The system is designed to improve incident detection, support proactive traffic management, and reduce secondary crashes. The goal is to enhance overall corridor safety and mobility on one of the East Coast's most congested routes.
