Transit Services for Virginia NWR ITS Architecture

City of Charlottesville Public Works Department

• Provide traffic signal priority for transit vehicles based on center-to-center communications with the transit management center.
• Exchange traffic and transit information with a transit management center.

NWR Local Public Safety Agencies

• Disseminate threat information to other agencies.
• Share information with other public safety agencies via the Emergency Operations Centers to support large-scale incidents and disasters.
• Operate and maintain security sensors in areas such as transit stops, transit stations, rest areas, park and ride lots, modal interchange facilities, on-board a transit vehicle, etc.
• Collect and respond to silent and audible alarms received from travelers in secure areas (such as transit stops, rest areas, park-and-ride lots) and from on-board transit vehicles.
• Operate and maintain security surveillance devices and analysis of that data to detect potential threats such as at transit stops, transit stations, rest areas, park and ride lots, modal interchange facilities, on-board a transit vehicle, etc.
• Analyze security sensor data and correlate with surveillance data and alerts from other agencies to detect potential threats.
• Plan strategically for emergency response.

NWR Local Transit Agencies

• Manage transit vehicle service histories.
• Provide interactive traveler information including routes, schedules, transfer options, fares, real-time schedule adherence, current incidents, weather conditions, yellow pages, and special events to travelers (on-board transit vehicles, at stops/stations, using personal devices), traveler information service providers, media, and other transit organizations.
• Monitor transit vehicle operator or traveler activated alarms.
• Generate preventative maintenance schedules for transit vehicles automatically.
• Disable a transit vehicle remotely when required.
• Collect operational and maintenance data from transit vehicles.
• Maintain interface with digital map providers.
• Furnish users with real-time transit schedule information.
• Alert operators, travelers, and police to potential incidents identified by these security features.
• Manage demand response transit services, including paratransit including planning and scheduling of these services, providing automated vehicle dispatch and automatic updates to customer service operator systems.
• Assign transit operators to runs in a fair manner while minimizing labor and overtime services, considering operator preferences, qualifications, accumulated work hours, and other information about each operator.
• Coordinate schedules with other agencies and modes, including transit transfer cluster and transfer point information.
• Authenticate transit vehicle operators.
• Manage fixed route transit operations including planning, scheduling, and dispatching associated with fixed and flexible route transit services, updating customer service operator systems, and providing current vehicle schedule adherence and optimum scenarios for schedule adjustment.
• Monitor transit vehicle locations via interactions with on-board systems.
