Definition:

These devices are typically located along the roadside and are controlled by operators in the Fredericksburg District which aids them in monitoring and managing conditions. Examples include traffic controllers for the traffic signal system, vehicle detection, and video image detection systems (VID). Approximately 25% of the District's signals are equipped with VIDs and the remainder uses loops. CCTV coverage along primary routes are planned.Within the District there are both closed loop signal systems and independent signals, however, central traffic control is able to communicate and monitor all traffic signals within the District. The Fredericksburg District Signal System is responsible for controlling signals in the 14 counties of Fredericksburg. The signals in the 14 counties will be shared control between the District Traffic Engineering and the VDOT TMC. The TMC primarily taking control in emergency situations.
