  • Respond to commercial vehicle and freight equipment related emergencies including incidents involving hazardous materials as well as the detection of non-permitted transport of security sensitive hazmat.
  • Receive and respond to Mayday messages from vehicles and drivers.
Private Commercial Carriers
  • Monitor the location and status of commercial vehicles and their cargo using on-board equipment.
  • Send on-board commercial vehicle data to the fleet center.
  • Send information such as status of driver, vehicle, carrier IDs and cargo information identified via an electronic tag from equipment on-board a commercial vehicle to roadside facilities.
VDOT Central Office
  • Receive and respond to Mayday messages from vehicles and drivers.

  • Perform automated roadside safety inspections including using hand held devices to rapidly inspect the vehicle and driver.
  • Exchange information concerning safety, credentialing, and operations of commercial vehicles between the center and the roadside check stations, across jurisdictions, with fleet operators and others who request information.
  • Send pull-in messages, when appropriate, to commercial vehicles traveling at mainline speeds.
  • Send roadside commercial vehicle inspection information including accident reports, violations, citations, and the daily site activity data to the commercial vehicle administration center.
  • Perform roadside commercial vehicle checks of vehicles at mainline speeds - reading tag data, identification, weight and vehicle characteristics, and credential checking.
  • Collect and review commercial vehicle safety and security data from the field.
