Tunnel Guide Lights for Speed Management
Project Description: The Tunnel Guide Lights for Speed Management project applies an LED lighting system to monitor the speed of traffic at the approaches and exits of a bridge–tunnel (decline and incline). LED lights will flash in a synchronized patter to give the motor vehicle operator a signal to increase or decrease the speed. As an analogy, the lighting would be like runway lights at the sides of the roadway to guide motorists. The project consists of a technology scan to determine the feasibility of this type of lighting deployment for speed management in tunnels in the Southwestern Region, specifically the I–77 Mountain Tunnels in the Bristol District. An initial investigation of the algorithm would be undertaken and if the results are promising, a pilot deployment will be designed and implemented. Objectives will include improved safety and throughput and reduced speed variance. If the initial deployment shows positive results, other tunnels in Hampton Roads and the mountain tunnels in SW Virginia will be evaluated for applicability.
