Definition:

This market package represents traveler information systems (e.g., Statewide 511 Virginia, Virginia Statewide ATIS Clearinghouse) and others (National Advisory Warning Systems) alerting the public in emergency situations such as child abductions, severe weather events, civil emergencies, and other situations that pose a threat to life and property. The alert includes information and instructions for the VDOT NOVA STC, VDOT NOVA STSS, NOVA Local Signal Centers NOVA Local Transit Centers, and the traveling public, to improve public safety and enlist the public's help in some scenarios. This market package also supports other emergency and homeland security alert systems such as the Emergency Alert System (EAS). When an emergency situation is reported and verified and the terms and conditions for system activation are satisfied, the National Advisory Warning System broadcasts emergency information to VDOT NOVA STC, VDOT NOVA STSS, NOVA Local Transit Centers, NOVA Local Signal Centers, and others that operate ITS systems. These centers can provide the alert information to the traveling public using ITS technologies such as dynamic message signs, highway advisory radios, in-vehicle displays, transit displays, Statewide 511 Virginia, and Virginia Statewide ATIS Clearinghouse.
