Projects
The Regional ITS Architecture provides a starting point for project definition. It provides an overall framework that shows how anticipated projects will integrate with each other and with existing systems. This page lists all the ITS projects that have been mapped to the regional ITS architecture.
Project | Status | Timeframe | Description |
---|---|---|---|
Adaptive Traffic Signal Systems | Planned | Mid–Term (5–10 years) | Implementation of adaptive traffic signal systems to improve mobility and reduce peak period delays. Consider operations for bicycles and pedestrians. Could be employed in any jurisdiction in the region so this project architecture shows a representative set of devices/interfaces that could be applied as needed in the region. |
Assess New Sub–Regional TMC | Planned | Near Term (0–5 years) | Prepare inventory of the capacity of the existing sub–regional TMCs vs the anticipated demands for management of assets across the region. Based on the comparison of available TMC resources against anticipated service demands assess the necessity for new sub–regional TMCs – a new sub–regional TMC in the SE area of the Triangle Region for example. |
Centralize Data Warehousing and Distribution | Planned | Near–Term (0–5 years) | Assess the types of data currently being gathered by municipalities and agencies in the Triangle Region and develop agreements for establishing a central data warehousing and distribution process. Also assess and specify software and hardware platform requirements. |
Complete Regional Fiber Network – NCDOT | Planned | Mid Term (5–10 years) | Perform assessment to identify gaps and develop projects to fill the gaps in the network. |
Consolidate Municipal Signal Systems Management | Planned | Mid–Term (5–10 years) | Perform assessment of the existing municipal TMCs in the region and identify other municipal signal systems that can be connected and controlled by the existing TMCs. Ensure software and hardware platforms will support connected vehicles and autonomous vehicle operations. |
Coordinated Corridor Traffic Signal Timing | Planned | Near Term (0–5 years) | Continue implementation and updating of coordinated traffic signal timing plans along critical corridors throughout the region. Consider operations for bicycles and pedestrians. |
Emergency Pre–emption | Existing/Planned | Near Term (0–5 years) | Establish standard equipment specifications and operational requirements for emergency pre–emption equipment. exists in several areas across the region using mostly proprietary interfaces and equipment; showing a representative Local Signal System that could be applied to any project in the region. |
Establish Agreements for System Consolidation and Management | Planned | Near–Term (0–5 years) | Establish agreements for municipalities with other municipalities, municipalities with NCDOT, and NCDOT Division to NCDOT Division to establish parameters for ownership, maintenance, and operation of ITS assets. Examples of the coverage of the agreements include management and control of assets along corridors that cross jurisdictional boundaries (municipality–municipality) and management and control of traffic signals at interchange ramps (municipality–NCDOT or municipality–Turnpike Authority). Important considerations in the agreement include payment for services, staffing requirements, ownership of hardware/software, and management of operations during special events or emergency situations. |
Establish software and hardware platforms to serve connected vehicles and autonomous vehicles | Planned | Near Term (0–5 years) | Ensure that new traffic signal system implementations will support CV/AV and identify strategic corridors that may require upgrades to support CV/AV. Representative pairs of signal systems (Local TOC/Signals and NCDOT Signals/RTMC) to highlight Signal Phase & Timing Related services, namely TM04 Connected Vehicle Traffic Signal System. Pay close attention to the standards related to this project – both the interface standards as well as the standards governing the equipment itself such as the US DOT's Roadside Unit (RSU) Specification. |
Expand Travel Information Coverage | Existing/Planned | Near Term (0–5 years) | Distribute travel information to municipalities and transit agencies across the region including information on planned construction on surface streets. Will need to assess where this is not already available. |
Implement AVL technology for Transit | Existing/Planned | Near–Term (0–5 years) | Implement AVL for transit vehicles including providing DMS at bus stops and web–based information distribution. |
Integrated Corridor Management | Planned | Near to Long Term | Implement NCDOT ICM for significant roadway projects and areas prone to significant recurring congestion. Includedevelopment of standard operating procedures and deployment of static signs, DMS, variable speed limit signs, CCTV, and optimized corridor signal timing along planned detour routes. ICM will also require agreements among with and between NCDOT and affected municipalities. |
Inventory current deployments | Planned | Near Term (0–5 years) | Prepare an inventory of all existing ITS device deployments including date of installation, expected useful life, and current operating condition. |
Managed Motorways | Planned | Near Term (0–5 years) | Implement managed motorway projects to include ITS technologies such as DMS, speed detection, ramp metering, lane control, CCTV, and CV/AV. |
New Municipal Traffic Signal System | Planned | Mid–Term (5–10 years) | New traffic signal system with complete fiber network and equipment that are compatible with the other regional operating platforms. |
Occupancy Detection in Parking Decks | Planned | Mid–Term (5–10 years) | Integration of technology to detect space occupancy in parking decks to be used as part of wayfinding to direct drivers to available parking. |
Regional standards for software, hardware, and communication platroms | Planned | Near Term (0–5 years) | Perform study to identify standards for software, hardware, and communication system platforms for all regional service providers including emergency services, transit operators, NCDOT, and municipalities. |
Replace/upgrade outdated devices | Planned | Near Term (0–5 years) | Identify parameters for replacement of equipment that is near or beyond their useful life. |
Staff Training for Operation and Maintenance of ITS Equipment | Planned | Near Term (0–5 years) | Establish training for staff that will be resonsible for operating and maintaining the ITS equipment. |
Transit Signal Priority / Bus Rapid Transit | Planned | Near Term (0–5 years) | Strategically assess corridors for implementation of technologies to provide transit signal priority to improve transit services/bus rapid transit. |
Unified Transit Farebox System | Planned | Near Term (0 – 5 years) | Implement a common transit payment system that is operable across all transit systems in the region. |
